WHO I AM MATTERS

Less humid and yet just as sunny and relaxing as LA, Kaohsiung is where I was born and raised. Kaohsiung is the second-largest city in Taiwan, an island country that locates in East Asia. Ever since I left my hometown to pursue an education at USC, I have been constantly reflecting on my future goal. This process has brought me to conclude that my ultimate goal is to work for hedge funds. This is certainly not an easy target. Therefore, before reaching my end goal, I have decided to start my career in an accounting firm as a tax strategist to immerse and familiarize myself with financials and tax strategies.

Same as my dad, I spend a relatively large portion of my time reading. More accurately speaking, I have adopted this hobby from him as a kid. We share the same satisfaction when we fill the house with books and turn the rooms into mini-libraries that stores the various topics that we are interested in a different time in life. On the other hand, instead of sharing the same hobby with my mom, we share a similar personality: we are both proactive. We believe in completing things ahead of time instead of delaying and procrastinating on tasks that we know are unavoidable.

Despite the qualities I share with my parents, we are still fundamentally different. I take a relatively free approach toward life. Rather than planning ahead, I enjoy going with the flow and seeing what life has to offer. I would say that I still live under the expectation of my family. Taking my approach toward life as an example, I would much prefer to accept unexpected changes and embrace unanticipated opportunities rather than mold life to be exactly as I want it to be. And yet, to live up to my parent’s expectations, I have learned to plan ahead and set targets and goals for the future. This may not necessarily be a bad thing as planning beforehand and figuring out a direction early in life are crucial steps to achieve success. It is just an undeniable fact that I still operate largely under my parent’s influence and their expectations.

One person that I look up to is a friend who is never fear of fighting for her own rights and what she believed in. Her courage to stand up for herself despite opposition is an attitude that I have aspired to obtain.

I feel a special connection with wolves. Its high intelligence, ability to coordinate and collaborate within the pack and caring characteristics all made them a unique specie that I attach to. It is stunning to me that a family group can be persevered for several generations, carrying knowledge and information through the years, from generation to generation. These qualities are what I believe we as humans should look up to. My aspiration toward nature also applies to bamboo, a plant that is strong and yet also “bends” when necessary. Such resilience is a wisdom that I believe should be learned from.

  1. Hi Emily, thanks for the good read. Your connection to wolves is something that I can somewhat relate to. I've always been a big fan of huskies and alaskan malamutes which are loosely related to wolves (though I'm not sure they share the wolf-like qualities that you mentioned above). On another note, I agree that it's important to find the right balance between planning ahead and going with the flow, where one or the other may be more appropriate depending on the situation.

  2. I feel a kinship with you. I love to collect books and fill the rooms of my life with them. This deliberate and revealing choice is one I like to study in others.

Quarantine and zoom have had one nice side effect at least. During television interviews, I like to focus on the background of the offices where the interviewee is seated. Oftentimes, I feel like I learn more from the books in the background than what is being said.

  3. It sounds like your wolf 'patronus' will set you up well for work at a hedge fund! I think it's great to have a goal like that and be able to take career steps that will lead you in the right direction. I imagine it couldn't have been easy to leave home for USC, so I applaud your confidence to make that big choice. I'm looking forward to hearing more about how going from Taiwan to the US has shaped your perspective!

  4. Hi Emily, I enjoyed how you started your post with the comparison between LA and Kaohsiung. It painted a good picture in my mind of the city in which you were raised in. I think it is great to always have a friend you can look up to. I enjoyed reading your description about the wolves. I liked how you went into detail about its characteristics and qualities and the importance of them.

  5. Hi Emily, I really liked your post and connected to what you said about your parents. I also think it's very important to plan ahead for the future but maintain an easy-going attitude. My parents are very goal oriented and have raised me with the same values but I also really see the benefit of going with the flow and taking on new opportunities as they are presented to you.
